A new electric car has been unveiled by Tesla Motors. The details of the new Tesla Model X electric SUV car were revealed on Thursday, February 9, 2012, at the company’s design studios in Hawthorne, California.

Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk revealed the Tesla Model X prototype for the first time, a sibling of the 2013 Tesla Model S, with mass production to start in 2013 and volume delivery happening in 2014.

According to reports, the Tesla Model X, the company’s third electric car, is a seven-seated all-electric crossover-like, wherein among the key features include doors opening up vertically which Tesla calls them as “falcon-wing doors” and notable high enough for anyone to stand in.

“This is kind of the killer app for families. It has more utility than a minivan, and better performance, much better performance, than an SUV” Musk was quoted telling to reporters after the preview.

“Because it is an electric car, and we don’t have to package a traditional internal combustion engine powertrain, we have available to us much more packaging opportunities,” Mr. Musk added, noting that the Model X has an innovative all-wheel-drive system.

“You can get in and out in the tightest garage or parking spot without hitting the wall or car next to you, or your head,” Mr. Musk noted, explaining the advantage of the falcon wings door, as he stressed out that the vehicle has sufficient room for seven adults, and their luggage.

Apparently, the Tesla Model X has two trunks: one in the rear and another under up front, weighs about 10 percent more than Tesla Model S and shares around 60 percent of its content, with reports saying that it would mean a 10 percent less range from its battery packs.

In addition, it’s speed to be going from 0 to 60 miles an hour in about 4.4 seconds, with its price being expected to be somehow similar to that of Model S and may start at $49,900 after a $7,500 federal tax credit, and can go to $90,000, depending on options.
