An attempt to assassinate Kurt Westgaard in his home in Aarhus failed. A 28-year-old Somalia man was armed with an ax and a knife when he tried to enter Westergaard’s home. Westergaard and his 5 year granddaughter in a sleepover, called police and sought shelter in a specially made safe room, authorities said.

He was not hurt. Police arrived and tried to arrest the man; he wielded an ax at an officer, who then shot him in the knee and hand, authorities said. The man is to be charged today with attempted murder.

Kurt Westgaard is a cartoonist famous for his cartoon of the Muslim prophet Muhammad wearing a bomb with his turban years ago. This cartoon has met strong and sometimes violent reactions from Muslims worldwide.

This cartoon made his career. In a 2009 interview, Westergaard said he was trying to “show that terrorists get their spiritual ammunition from parts of Islam and with this spiritual ammunition, and with dynamite and other explosives, they kill people.”

This cartoon that he created had caused him a lot of murder attempts.
