Avatar Movie Opens with $27 Million on First Day Gross Ticket Sales, Snowstorm Slows Box Office – James Cameron’s latest film “Avatar” opened last December 18, 2009 in which the movie projected a $27 million first day gross ticket sales.
Compared to Titanic, James Cameron’s other colossal movie, Avatar is hanging in there with that big winner. The initial weekend for the mega director’s ocean-going movie was 28.6 million dollars. Still, comparing early Avatar success to early Titanic success is difficult at best, except to say that both seem bound for motion picture icon status.
But on the said part of the box office sales, a massive snowstorm kept the movie goers home and prevented the big budget technopic movie from setting box office record as Avatar is expected to project a not staggering $72 million this weekend in box office.
This is only the 3rd best December debut of all time and despite the Avatar’s 3D ticket price premium, “I Am Legend” remains to be on top at the box office this December followed by “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of The King.”
Now, Fox executives are so eager waiting for the East Coast snow to clear with high hopes that Avatar will continue to build steam and turn a blue weekend into a box office high sales.
